Thank you so much for this! It’s really strange (in this day and age) when you try to research something and there is not really much info. This is what I have found with composting. Haha, nearly drove me mad. I’m excited to follow your lead and implement a system like this. Simplicity is underrated!
Haha, this happened to me, too, originally! It's how my whole "writing about compost" mission got started - I was trying to write the resources I wish I had been able to find when I got started. <3
Let me know how implementation goes! And hit me up if you have Qs. (I think there's a DM feature on this app now?) I'll post blueprints of my design soon, too. I'm excited for you!
The picture of you with your head in the green can cracked me up. I learned something. I throw cardboard or newspapers in the bottom of my bin so I don’t get that ‘sludge’ stuck at the bottom. I know you do pretty well with the ick factor but having that at bottom helps with getting that sludge out. Just a thought….
Oh, I'm not scraping out sludge - interesting assumption, though! It makes sense why you would think that. I'm just using my hands to scoop out the food waste and transfer it to the compost bin. The garbage can was too big to pick up and dump manually.
Just wow! Right when I think I have learned everything there is to know about composting you come up with yet another great column. Years ago I tried my own hand at composting. Like gardening it is ever evolving. I got to a point where I became frustrated and a little overwhelmed by it all and I quit. I wish so much there had been someone like you around to help with ideas and questions. Your hard work, research and how to build are greatly appreciated. I know what I went through and you have done it x’s 10. I also appreciate how you are spreading the word (and compost 😁) and give so much of your time. A shout out to Kevin, the garden helper, too.
I tried to access your share of other peoples stories but was unable to. 🤷♀️
