Love this! I’ve got loads of young sod - some of which I’m removing and other areas I’m seeding with other grasses and trying to building better soil structure to encourage deeper roots!
Is the last method - the tarping step - to ensure the seeds are killed due to light deprivation? I have a very lazy pile going that started as sod I removed to plant a garden - I dig into it occasionally to put spent mycelium blocks and other organic waste that didn’t make it into my more “regulated” piles. your suggestions are timely, thank you! 😆
Ooo, let me know how it goes for you! I'll be very curious. And yes, tarp is about light deprivation. But also if the pile gets hot enough because youre adding other types of waste etc., maybe it just gets hot enough to kill the seeds, anyway!!! <3
“…will compost down to perfectly good soil.” I like that ending. Why do they use that netting anyway? I will have to look it up. Years ago I was digging up a plod of lawn to put in a garden. I couldn’t figure out where all that plastic shit was coming from. I did figure it out. Weird. Anyway, I support what you are saying about lawns and how to make them useful -compost. Hah.
I am honestly not sure - probably has to do with keeping its shape when its being transported & stored, before it's actually put onto the lawn? But it's so insanely stupid. If aliens find our remains in the future, they'll be so confused by our choices.
