The cold preserves discarded vegetables for longer that have been thrown out by folks with more money than conscience which I've been known to collect and consume:)

I've continued to throw my scraps in there this winter even though I know they aren't breaking down, I wonder if I should start a separate "winter pile" so the old one I started in the summer will be ready and not starting over once it warms up with all the winter scraps?

Do you need your compost for something straight-away come spring? If so, a second pile might not be a bad idea! Just make sure you're mixing food scraps (nitrogen) with sommee carbon source, so that when things warm up again - you have everything in place for efficient decay <3 !
